
I'm not sure why they are keeping Plex Media Player separate though, especially since the desktop client is being removed. I suspect the reason why Plex for Desktop is closed source and uses the LGPLv3 versions of mpv and ffmpeg is because they had to embed the Plex Media Server into the program for offline download functionality. If you want digital passthrough you can apparently configure that through mpv.conf. If you want a third option, I maintain a client called MPV Shim that may be helpful to users who need features not present in the newer Plex client yet, such as Linux support, HDR tonemapping, mpv.conf, and arbitrary MPV/ffmpeg builds.
